If your home is within roughly two miles of the Pacific, your HVAC equipment is fighting a corrosion battle most installers from inland never have to think about. Salt-laden air pits aluminum condenser coils, eats fasteners, and shortens equipment life by years.
What to specify on a coastal install
- Coated condenser coils designed for coastal/marine environments — most major brands offer them as an option, not standard.
- Stainless or coated fasteners and equipment pads.
- Annual coil rinse (fresh water, gentle pressure) as part of the service contract.
Heating is rarely the bottleneck
San Diego coastal heating loads are mild. This is one of the few places in California where a smaller-capacity heat pump genuinely covers the entire year. If your installer is quoting you a furnace upgrade "because of cold snaps," push back.
