How HVAC Ethos Vets HVAC Businesses

The methodology behind every contractor mention on this site. Public on purpose.

HVAC Ethos vets contractors against seven criteria. Each is weighted in editorial judgment, none is automated, and all of it is checked at the time a contractor is added — and re-checked annually.

  1. License & business verification

Current CSLB C-20 license in good standing, matching the company name on the truck, marketing, and estimate. Liability insurance and workers' comp on file.

  2. Relevant local experience

Demonstrated installs in the specific Southern California sub-region and home types they claim to serve — coastal, inland, older homes, mini-split retrofits.

  3. Local reputation

We read the one-star and three-star reviews specifically, looking for patterns. A handful of unhappy reviews handled well counts more than a thousand five-star reviews with no engagement.

  4. Clear communication

Itemized written estimates, plainly named equipment, and a willingness to answer detailed questions without urgency tactics.

  5. Professional presentation

Branded vehicles, uniformed techs, named appointment windows, and follow-through on small commitments.

  6. Service transparency

Honest discussion of scope, including when a job is outside their wheelhouse. We weight 'we wouldn't be the right fit for this' very highly.

  7. Customer-first behavior

Warranty fulfillment, post-install follow-up, and willingness to make small things right without escalation.

What a mention means

A vetted mention means the contractor cleared the standards above at the time of review. It is not a guarantee of any specific install, nor a promise that they're the right fit for every project. Homeowners are responsible for the final hire decision.

Do businesses pay to be listed?

Some of the contractors we mention have paid or referral relationships with HVAC Ethos. When that's the case, we say so on the page, and outbound links use the rel="sponsored" attribute. Payment never affects whether a business clears our vetting standards or how they're presented editorially. A business that pays us but fails our vetting is not listed.
